The year is finally winding down, with about a week left of school. It’s interesting to see how many things have changed, and how much I have grown as a person just in a single year. I am moving on to my senior year and I can’t even believe it, my senior year of college. This all went by entirely too quickly, and it’s extremely bittersweet.

I have been faced with so many new challenges this past academic year. I gained and e-board position within my sorority, taken on several classes for my specific major, completed an internship, and much more. I could not be happier with what I have accomplished. Changes are not always wanted, but they will make you a better and more well-rounded individual.

I am so proud of the changes that have been made in my sorority. I think we have improved in so many areas, and we are continuing to do so. Theta Phi Alpha is in great standing nationally, and here at York College. I can’t wait for what is to come in this next year. We have amazing new additions to the sorority and I know these girls will do great things for our chapter.

My internship has been great. York College’s Office of Communications is amazing, with some amazing faculty. I have gained so much experience from this and I am so glad that I had this opportunity. It has given me insight into what I may want to do in the future and I will take what I have learned along the way with me, wherever I go. I am so grateful for my advisor, Professor Hope Carroll, who led me in this direction.

The people around you make you who you are, they cause you to grow. With no change, there is no growth. Continue to challenge yourself to make yourself an even better person. Do more than you did the year before, and only keep improving. You may never know just how much you are capable of!

It immediately puts a smile on my face when I wake up in the morning and it is not raining in York. It is such a beautiful day today, so I know it will be a great one :)

While I know the end of the school year is nearing and everyone is extremely busy and stressed, try to relax and get some fresh air! Take advantage of this perfect weather. The sunshine is not only going to relax you, but actually make you happier. Maybe you could write a paper outside, or study for a test! No one likes being trapped inside on a nice day such as this. You could even take a break from studying and do some outdoor activities. I know I will be.. It’s a great day for a run on the Rail Trail :)

It’s amazing how quickly one’s life could end in the blink of an eye, and so unexpectedly. This past year has been filled with a number of tragedies that continue to occur. Fred Rogers perfectly states the frame of mind that all people should have, especially when is comes to disasters such as the most recent, the explosion at the Boston Marathon.

This has really had me thinking the past few days. It is truly devastating to believe that there are so many people in the world willing to harm others, and more so affect the lives of their families and friends for the rest of their lives. I believe that a tragedy such as this has a huge affect on the community and really brings people together. Over the past few days I have even noticed people being more appreciative of others, staying in contact with friends and family, and reaching out to help those in need. This is something we should be aware of everyday, not only when a disaster occurs. If there were more humble people in this world, it would definitely be a much better place. Being away at school I think that we learn to appreciate our loved ones because we may be separated from them. You should never take advantage of anyone and always make sure that you show your love to those that have given it to you. Just like we have learned over the past few days, and even months as a result of these tragedies, you never know what may happen in this unexpected world. You always think, “no way, this could never happen to me,” but it can, it absolutely can.

Unfortunately, you can’t trust everyone in the world. You want for people to be good, but that’s not always the case. Stay humble, and look for the helpers. Be the helpers. We can’t always prevent tragedy but we can aide in getting the world back to a better place.

Late night thinking; Procrastination

I am not sure how I managed to do it.. But I have been the most productive I ever have been in my whole life the past two days. It must have something to do with the weather. I tend to stress myself out come every single Monday and I’m not even sure why? It’s Wednesday and I am finished with 90% of my work for the week, and it feels great.

This week has made me focus on my priorities and I have come to realize that I am much happier when what needs to be accomplished is done in a timely manner. So don’t stress yourself out and definitely try to avoid procrastinating. Yes I know, the one word every college student lives for and what every student will continue to do.. Procrastinate.

Stop thinking and start doing. Nothing will ever get done if you sit there and think about getting it done. Planning will only make it easier for you in the long run. Don’t exaggerate the difficulty of a task in your head and put it off. Most things that need to be done are much easier than you make yourself believe. You can also start with your hardest tasks of the week and by the time you get to the easier tasks you will not feel discouraged, you will feel relaxed and productive. So, get started!

By avoiding procrastination I have found that I have more time for myself and I am much more content at the end of the day. I guarantee you will feel the same :)

Alumni Easter Egg Hunt

The Alumni Board of Directors had their 15th annual Easter Egg Hunt here at York College in the Grumbacher Center. This was my second year volunteering and what an amazing turnout there was! My sorority and I, along with many other organizations on campus, came out to help make this event run smoothly. We all volunteered to craft with the kids, paint faces, watch over the bounce house, play games, and hunt for easter eggs! There was even a magician, a balloon artist, and the Easter bunny at the event :)

I had a great time, especially being around all of the kids. I met many wonderful families that had been attending for years. One alumni has been taking her children to this event for the past 11 years! I couldn’t believe it. This really shows the significance of York College’s connection with their alumni.

At one point in the day I had a conversation with a 5 year old named Ian. I asked him, “What is your favorite part of this whole day Ian?” and he said.. “Well, the Easter Egg Hunt of course, silly!” It was so precious and I did not even see that answer coming. These kids really do make this whole thing possible!

This is a great way to bring the community together for a fun filled day. The event was extremely well put together and I believe that everyone did a great job in ensuring that those who attended really enjoyed themselves.

Excel events held at York College can be extremely helpful to you as an individual and in an organization! Today at 2 pm there was a BrandU event held in the William Walker room where members of the PRSSA Executive Board presented to a group of students here at York. This helped with some branding ideas and motivations for branding. I believe that these events are very valuable to us students. Why not take advantage of these on campus events that are free and open to everyone ?! Might I add that there was even pizza!

These are great lessons, tips and ideas to take away and to use in the future. Take advantage of these opportunities as they come! And remember to make an image for yourself :)

Being involved in Greek life, let alone any organization on campus, it is always important to make sure that you are continuously supporting fellow organizations. This may involve helping with their events, supporting their cause, or advertising their organization.

Delta Phi Epsilon of York College is hosting their annual philanthropy/fundraising event, Deepher Dude. This is a male beauty pageant consisting of 4 different categories; Talent, Formal Wear, Swim Wear, Question & Answers. Several men are competing for the title of Deepher Dude tonight at 9:30 pm in the DeMeester Recital Hall (located in Wolf). This event is open to all organizations on campus and the proceeds benefit their Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Philanthropy. It is a great cause and this should be more than enough reason for everyone to take some time out of their night to attend. It is very enjoyable to watch and definitely worth it!

Again, it is so important to support our organizations on campus. Not only does this bring increased awareness of the organization to campus, but you also get what you give. Show your support and others in turn will show their support for you in the future.

“How you play today, from this moment on is how you will be remembered.”

I was one of many students who attended the York College Student Senate Leadership Conference today. Students from every type of organization on campus attended this 4 hour conference which consisted of different workshops and keynote speakers. I definitely did take away some useful information from this. I was especially intrigued by the workshop “From Successful to Significant”. The point of this workshop was for us to make sure that our organization is not just successful, but a significant part of our college community. It taught us some key concepts designed to help guide our organizations to its peak.

This clip from “We Are Marshall” was shown during the presentation. This is one inspirational speech and if you have not yet seen the movie, I suggest you watch it! The Student Senate speakers did a great job with this workshop because they really explained to all of the organizations how important it is to be significant and remembered, on campus and in the community. Do things that you can continue to do for years to come. Do things for your organization that people will remember and look back on in a positive way. Always work towards making your organization the best that it possibly can be.

Networking is KEY

I advise any and every one who attends college to get involved in something, whether it be a club, an organization, or a program. You truly have no idea how many opportunities you are presented unless you are doing so and getting involved at school. I have learned the skill of networking, along with many other valuable skills in my past few years of being at York College.

What made me think about this was a meeting I had earlier today with a York College Alumni. We met at a nearby Starbucks - which was MUCH needed. I basically spoke with her about the improvements of York College over the years, her current career, her future plans with her career, her education at York, and internship opportunities. I met her because she is an alumni of my sorority and she contacted me a few months ago asking me if I was interested in doing an internship with the business she just opened here in York. Despite the fact that I am not currently able to do an internship with her business, I am still continuing to network. I am using my resources to gain contacts for the future, such as when I am looking for a career after graduation.

SO, the point is, get involved. Being apart of Theta Phi Alpha has connected me with so many alumni who I am constantly getting advice from and information on future opportunities. Networking is a great strategy for getting your foot in the door. Friendly relationships with people may be necessary, especially for those hidden job opportunities that are not advertised. You never know who you might meet along the way during your college years. Take advantage of the different types of organizations York College has to offer!

It is always possible to eat healthy while at school! York college has several places on campus to eat and you can always go the healthier route. If you have had a long weekend of binge eating junk food, having good eating habits as often as possible during the week will make you feel better about yourself and allow you to splurge on the weekends :) Try salads or grilled chicken and avoid as many fried foods! It’s really not as hard as it seems and if you stick to it, it will get easier.

One of my biggest pet peeves is working with people in class that have absolutely no input in the discussion or assignment. It is so simple to pay attention during class to really understand what you are required to do.. So why is this so hard for some people?

It is very ironic that this happened in my Sociology class today. You’re learning about social behaviors, however some do not even understand the basics. My advice is to please give as many ideas and input as possible when working in a group. You will gain so much more respect from others in your group and they will be more willing to work with you. This is why I have learned to do just this. I understand that some lack social interaction skills, especially if you are a timid person, but this is necessary when being in school and in the end you will have a better understanding of the content. Just relax, no one is judging you as much as you think they are and all ideas are welcome! Trust me :)

Monday Mornings.

Waking up on Monday mornings may be one of the hardest things to do. Especially when you are getting up for early classes and/or work. That is not much to look forward to. There are some things that you can do to make for a better Monday and an easier wake up!

1. Get some work accomplished over the weekend - Do a little bit of work each day so you are not weighing yourself down with work during the week. This will help decrease stress.

2. Avoid staying up so late - This is a huge problem being in college. You find yourself staying up late and sleeping in on the weekends which makes it hard to adjust at the start of the week. On the weekends try to get to sleep a little earlier, and wake up a little earlier.

3. Try to keep a healthy diet on the weekends - Over eating and compulsive junk food eating is inevitable on the weekends. Try to reduce this. It will prepare you for healthier eating habits at the start of the week.

4. Wake up on the right side of the bed- Wake up earlier. Take a shower. Start out your Monday with a cup of coffee or tea as soon as you wake up. Fruit for breakfast is the quickest source of energy for your body.

5. Give yourself something to look forward to - The next weekend is only a week away. Make plans with friends or family. Go out and do something fun. Work hard during the week so that you can play hard during the weekend.

For all Ravens fans out there right now residing in York, PA.. WE DID IT! 2013 Super Bowl Champs !!! What an amazing game and an amazing way to end the season. So proud of my Ravens, and Ray Lewis of course, he deserves this. I truly do love where I am from!
